The Dynasty Cycle
I’ve embarked on a play cycle about my Korean-American family’s 100+ history in the United States. I’ve been sourcing text from family photo albums, interviews, and stories passed down through my family. Each play will explore different aspects of our Korean-American identity.
Belligerency explores loss, division, and the fallout of imperialism in the Korean peninsula.
Deliver Us explores faith, religion, and what it means to belong to a family
Kim’s Fine Food explores my grandfather’s childhood at his family’s restaurant in Depression-era Los Angeles

Garrett has complicated feelings about his Catholic upbringing, as a queer person, as an AAPI person, and as a person whose existence in America depended on an ancestor sneaking out of Korea using a Bible. He’s tried to write a play (with music) by himself that’s like, a new version of mass, but his family has other plans.
